National Healthy Schools Status (NHSS)
In 2009 DJCS achieved National Healthy Schools Status. NHSS is awarded on the basis of four sets of criteria, which relate not only to the school’s delivery of the curriculum, but also to its ethos and its approach to the broader school community. The National Healthy Schools Programme seeks to engage parents and carers in health-related issues as well as encouraging pupils and staff to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Healthy Schools is concerned with the implementation of a whole-school approach to health and wellbeing, both physical and emotional, in particular: “improvement in health and reduced health inequalities; raised pupil achievement; greater social inclusion and increased working between health promotion providers and education establishments” (Healthy Schools website)
The programme is also closely linked with the Every Child Matters (ECM) agenda.
Achieving NHSS
The achievement of NHSS is based on an audit of the school’s approach to four specific areas. These areas are:
Healthy Eating;
Physical Activity;
Emotional Health & Wellbeing, including bullying.
