On Wednesday lunchtime Mrs Dike and a group of current and past Johnston students were privileged to play in the Grade Hall of Durham Castle whist Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had lunch with a group of invited guests. This was Mrs Dike’s final engagement with Durham Music Service and Durham Johnston School as she is taking early retirement. We would like to thank her for her outstanding musical contribution to the life of Durham Johnston School over many years and would like to wish her all the best for the future.
Mr Holmes
Durham Johnston was one of three schools in the County who won Durham County Council’s London 2012 Olympic School of the Month in April. We were delighted to hear the new this week that we have won the award again for July.
Well done to all!
Many of you will have seen reports on the new release of information about sixth form destinations. It puts Durham Johnston as the top school in the area for entry into Oxford, Cambridge and the rest of the Russell Group universities. (Since it is for 2009, Durham and three other universities were not included in the Russell Group and the students applying after a gap year were omitted). We are very pleases, of course, even though 2009 was not our best year!

Mr McArdle
The maths dept is delighted to announce that Yuriy Tumarkin (Year 7) has won a silver medal in the Junior Maths Olympiad 2012.
Yuriy scored full marks in the Junior Maths Challenge in April - a first for a Durham Johnston pupil. He was then invited to take part in the Junior Olympiad. This is a two hour paper consisting of in depth problems aimed at the top 1200 scorers in the Junior Challenge for pupils in Year 8or below. This is a fantastic achievement for Yuriy and he is now ranked among the top 100 pupils in the UK.
